    Good Enough for Government Work
    From JOEY MARANTO

Federal worker goes to battle with his evil boss.

Who would have thought that a simple good deed for a customer at a local funeral home would have opened the doors to the federal workforce? Well, for Joey Maranto, it did. The show chronicles his life from being born a "Beltway Baby", to a naive college intern, to an experienced mid-level manager. But thanks to the boredom of living out the typical suburbanite family dream while managing to deal with the ups and downs of daily life as a federal worker, a birthday wish for an exciting life gives him much more than he bargained for. After landing an opportunity of a lifetime director's position - a break that was intended for his boss' mistress, Joey must do everything he can to survive his probationary period.

    Constructed
    from DARREN GOINS

This show answers the question, "What does masculine mean now?"

What does it mean to be a man in 2009? "Constructed" consists of five performance art monologues that expose how men in this millennia are negotiating the forces of attraction, power and production to answer this question. "Twenty Nine" is the narrative of a young man who after the unexpected death of his father and brother from cerebral hemorrhages finds himself the man of the family. "That Guy" is a darkly humorous look at a man who can't find anything more than the music of his youth to get fired up about. "Biker" is the narrative of a man who raced Big Wheels and Harleys that finds himself disabled after an accident. "Scents Memory" is a heterosexual man's AIDS narrative about the loss of his wife. In "Engineer" a forty-five year old former construction foreman talks about his transition to primary caregiver to his daughter. This tour de force one person show is a must see in 2009.

    I'm Not Oedipus
    from JAY NACHMAN

A play about death, family relationships and religion. With jokes.

Mom dies. Dad dates. Family dysfunction descends. That forms the backdrop for the play "I'm Not Oedipus," a journey about death and family relationships with detours along the way that include sex, loss, religion and rock & roll, and jokes.

Philadelphia's Broad Street Review called "I'm Not Oedipus" "a reflection on death and sex" a "highlight" of the 2006 Philadelphia Fringe Festival. The Philadelphia City Paper wrote "A guy talking about the death of his mother may sound like a downer; however, Jay Nachman manages to find gentle humor in it all… Nachman digs into his deepest feelings in lighthearted fashion." Playwright and performer Jay Nachman has called "I'm Not Oedipus" "the perfect show for anyone who has, or ever had, a mother."

    from THE COLABORATIVE

The Love Letter Project, Part 2 is a multi-disciplinary production created from community love letters by The CoLABorative.

Love is a rich, vital and complex theme integral to every aspect of our lives. "The Love Letter Project" collects love letters, poems and images from the community which The CoLABorative uses to create a new dance/music/theatre production each year. For "The Love Letter Project, Part 2", the performers artfully blend modern dance, flamenco, classical and contemporary music, theatre and poetry into a cohesive and compelling work. The submissions were incorporated as links between a suite of pieces exploring aspects of love and art, a good fight, self love, finding love, parents and children, enduring love, loss, and new beginnings. Led by the creative team of Janaea Rose Lyn, J. Andrew Dickenson and Shawn Hull, The CoLABorative is the six member faculty performing company of Cecil College. An audience/artist forum following the performance continues the process of community involvement through discussion about this production and the ongoing "Love Letter Project".

    Autoplant: A Poetic Monologue
    from PHILLIP BANNOWSKY

Rebellion and redemption at Chrysler's shuttered Newark Assembly

Chrysler's now closed plant in Newark comes back to life in this tale of redemption and rebellion on the assembly line. Bannowsky recounts how he and his shop mates, Big Man, Billy Goat, Warthog, and Gravy, torment each other to pass the time and then come together one thirsty summer night in a wildcat strike. Describing the nightmares and hazards of factory life, Bannowsky inserts anecdotes about student activism and popular culture, including Popeye cartoons and the film Soylent Green. In that Charlton Heston movie, an overpopulated world recycles its workers into food called Soylent Green, a process that reminds Bannowsky of the flesh- and soul-consuming labor of the assembly line. Bannowsky augments his presentation with old-fashion Foley to mimic factory sounds, electronic music, and slides of factory life. Journalist and critic Gary Soulsman said that Autoplant could be called "performance art, an epic comic monologue, or high-tech narrative poetry."

    From the Space Between Us
    from ALLIGATOR MOUTH IMPROV

Don't miss this completely improvised performance—inspired and inspiring!

Drawing on theater, movement, vocals, music, storytelling, and video, Alligator Mouth Improv uses audience stories, themes and ideas to create totally improvised one-of-a-kind performances. Ranging from dramatic to playful, an improvised performance, because of its inherent risk and deep levels of authenticity, provides an immediacy and intimacy that are extremely engaging for audience members. You feel connected to the performers and to each other, especially since your ideas profoundly shape what you experience. In "From the Space Between Us," four ensemble members will ask: What's possible when we surrender the "I" to the "we?" What can we create together that we can't create alone? What happens when we say "yes" to each other, no matter what? This is not stand-up comedy improv, this is inspired and inspiring performance. Come with no expectations. Leave with a greater sense of what's possible. For more information, see www.rhondamorton.com/alligator.html.

    from SHARP DANCE COMPANY

SHARP's "Meaning behind Movement" transforms dance from a performance to an experience.

Critics hail, "SHARP's performance has emerged as a centerpiece of the Philly Fringe" and "tackles some weighty themes uncommon to the dance stage (Lewis Whittington, Edge Philadelphia)." Raw emotion exudes from SHARP's dancers as they weave their tales, enticingly carrying the theory of "Meaning behind Movement." Dance should be more than a performance; it should be an experience. Addictive, uninhibited emotion, eccentric partnering, artistic collaboration and intense unison material fuse in contemporary movement, connecting the audience through individual interpretation. To intensify and transform dance into an odyssey, SHARP merges with local artists enhancing its innovative choreography with exceptionally moving photography, imaginative set pieces, and stimulating music and media. SHARP's collaborators include: Kylene Cleaver (Photographer), Fred Rogers Jr. (Set builder), Aaron Dougherty (Set builder), Brian Strachan (Costume Designer) and Lauren Mandilian (Projection Artist). SHARP feels that working with other artists expands their voice in a way that working alone never could.

This is part David Lynch part John Waters on stage, with video by world renowned VJ Holly Daggers and dance and performance by artist Michael Freeman.

    Bloody Noes' American Dream
    from BLOODY NOES'

Anti-human activities/provocations starring masked hulk and shadowy sylph.

More than performance art, the Bloody Noes are slowly unfolding the complex "anti-human" mythology surrounding a hulk (MC Drywall) and a sylph (DJ Cardboard). The two priests use a variety of activities and objects, including unworldly costumes, choreography, noise, occult ritualism, video projection and a big blue monster to encounter the audience at the unconscious level of their pop-culture-encrusted American psyche. What is the nature of this American Dream that animates us? The Bloody Noes stage an inquiry that is, at turns, hilarious, hypnotic, and horrifying. Revelations occur.

    from OPERA DELAWARE

Opera Delaware Presents World Premiers of Two Short Operas

"Black Horses," from the short story by Luigi Pirandello, depicts a team of horses that once belonged to the Princess. As they philosophize about the their current work in the cartage trade, they wonder why they walk slowly and solemnly with only a light carriage while other horses are whipped to run with heavy wagons. Finally, they realize they're pulling a funeral hearse, with their old Princess inside. In "The Stronger," from the Strindberg play, two women, Clara and Amelia, meet in a cafe on Christmas eve. Singing non-stop, never letting Amelia say a single word, Clara talks of old times together in the theater, until marriage and children changed her life. Memories begin to surface, and Clara suddenly realizes that, years ago, Amelia had had an affair with her husband. She flies into a rage, then consoles herself that she's going home to her family while Amelia remains alone.

Green eggs...clown...hobo. Who could ask for anything more?

This is a cool collaboration colliding the colossal talents of local loveable lad and playwright Matt Casarino with the scrappy, scandalous in your face style of City Theater Company. The piece de resistance, GREEN EGGS AND MAMET, will make a triumphant return to Wilmington for this event. The demented and uproarious take on the famous Dr. Seuss tale played to standing room only crowds at its premiere this past March. Who knew so many words rhymed with "truck"! In tow will be CTCers-in-training hailing all the way from Dover, DE. Under the tenacious tutelage of Mr. Casarino and Ms. Georgie Staley, these 6 up-and-coming trouble makers, direct from the Visual and Performing Arts Gifted Invitational Festival, concocted a "craptastic" musical about a hobo. Did we mention- there's also a play with a less-than-festive clown? Who could ask for anything more?!

Usiloquy Dance Designs present Chaat-a combustive dish of Mudras, music and percussive dance Bharatanatyam.

"Chaat" challenges the conventional perception of Indian classical dance Bharatanatyam, reinterpreting it as a powerful social language that encourages a dialogue in the community about the universal links between dance, food and emotions. Typically an Indian street side snack bursting with intensely hot, tangy, spicy, sweet and salty flavors, Chaat becomes a contemporary hybridization of the ancient techniques of Bharatanatyam, Indo Western fusion music and elaborate costumes. Set to specially commissioned music by Philadelphia based Thomas Flanagan and Jeremy Dyen of the group Amrita, each flavor on stage transforms into a nuanced expressive dance. The culmination of the flavors at the end mark the synchronicity of a fully prepared dish with life in its entirety.
